Dear readers,
April was a very active month for us at the at the American Society of Mexico. We held various events to address matters of great importance in the political, business, and social spheres, with the aim of building bridges that benefit the business community and society.
Our Public Affairs Task Force welcomed Jacqueline Ward, Minister Counselor for Economic Affairs at the United States Embassy, who, accompanied by her delegation, shared with us several key issues of importance to the United States government in its relationship with Mexico and its stance on them.
We also held a meeting with Congressman Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar, with whom we agreed to join efforts in support of a legislative agenda that considers all sectors and aims to strengthen the economy and investment in Mexico.
In alliance with Aeroméxico, our Organizations Steering Group, along with various organizations that are part of it, organized a memorable celebration for kids on Children’s Day. The event took place in Aeroméxico’s Oriente Hangar. It was a truly heartwarming experience for the little ones.
Accompanied by representatives from FIFARMA, leading companies, and government agencies, our delegation met with a diverse range of organizations to foster dialogues aimed at consolidating strategic ties during a significant institutional visit to Washington D.C.
This month, the Organizations Steering Group presents the commendable effort of TECHO US, an international organization active in 18 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, which works to overcome poverty in marginalized communities through the joint action of their inhabitants and young volunteers.
Also in April, the Organizations Steering Group successfully held the webinar “Your Board of Directors and Its Role in Fundraising,” led by the U.S.–Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership (BPP).
To conclude, Deby Beard suggests an exploration of La Casa de la Playa in the Caribbean, a paradisiacal destination on the Xcaret coast renowned for its hospitality, gastronomic delights, and profound connection with nature.
Best regards,
Larry Rubin
Release
Mexico City, April 2, 2025. In light of the recent announcements regarding United States trade policy, the American Society of Mexico notes that Mexico maintains a stable position in comparison to other nations, owing to its close economic relationship with its northern neighbor.
To date, the administration of President Donald Trump has made no announcement regarding a possible imposition of tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada into the United States. In this context, the American Society of Mexico recommends maintaining a proactive dialogue and active bilateral cooperation, with the aim of preserving economic and trade stability in the region.
Larry Rubin, President of the American Society of Mexico, pointed out that, while the imposition of tariffs by the United States has been a possibility since the appointment of the Secretary of Commerce, who has been a strong advocate for such policy measures, the impact on Mexico could be less than initially anticipated due to the mechanisms of the USMCA and the interdependence of supply chains.
“Many of the components that Mexico manufactures for the United States cross the border multiple times before becoming a finished product. I believe we can remain confident, as the repercussions will not be as severe as initially feared,” stated Mr. Rubin.
The announcement also highlights Mexico’s key role in the regional economy and the importance of the efforts undertaken by President Claudia Sheinbaum and her cabinet, led by the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, who have actively worked to maintain Mexico in a favorable position within the new trade strategy.
From AmSoc, we reiterate that, despite the uncertainty generated by the new trade policies, Mexico may well find itself in an advantageous position by sustaining its role as a key strategic partner for the United States, thereby potentially mitigating, for the present, the application of additional tariffs. Furthermore, we emphasize the enduring importance of the USMCA as a foundational element for Mexico’s economic resilience and the imperative to maintain ongoing evaluations of the potential impact of these measures on the most relevant productive sectors for the country.

Public Affairs Task Force
At the outset of the meeting, we reaffirmes our commitment to supporting companies in gaining a clearer understanding of the recently implemented sanctions, particularly those related to foreign terrorist organizations.
The Embassy team detailed an interagency initiative to collaborate with the Mexican government on matters of illicit finance and the trafficking of chemical precursors, including buprenorphine. In this context, businesses were encouraged to enhance compliance frameworks and internal processes.
The concerns of Mexico’s private sector, notably regarding the impact of recent U.S. government measures on American companies in Mexico, will be conveyed to the United States government.
The potential for private sector contributions to bilateral security efforts, through mechanisms such as equipment donations and expert input to law enforcement, was also acknowledged.
Discussions included President Trump’s stated interest in protecting investments in Mexico, and the ongoing efforts by leading political figures from both countries to strengthen the bilateral relationship.
Business representatives expressed concerns about issues of mutual impact, including security and economic stability, and a desire to collaborate on solutions. Migration, specifically the potential for a skilled labor framework, was cited as a relevant example.
While acknowledging developments concerning the United States, attention was drawn to matters within Mexico’s political context, such as the Judicial and Telecommunications Reforms, and their implications for legal certainty.
Notwithstanding these considerations, a robust channel of communication exists between the Mexican government and the business community. There is considerable anticipation surrounding the new organization specializing in digital transformation, which is poised to become a significant authority in the field.
The meeting highlighted opportunities to support President Sheinbaum’s economic growth objectives, while promoting international recognition of her administration’s efforts. President Sheinbaum’s effective response to the announcement of tariff measures was also recognized.
While a degree of political uncertainty remains, both nations maintain a constructive dialogue, fostering the prospect of continued prosperity and mutual benefit.

Mexico City, April 28, 2025
As part of the ongoing Government Leaders Series, the President of the American Society of Mexico (AmSoc), Larry Rubin, held a meeting with Deputy Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar and members of the Public Affairs Task Force.
At the meeting organized by the American Society of Mexico, Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar, Deputy Coordinator of the Morena Party caucus in the Chamber of Deputies, emphasized the importance of enacting legislation that encompasses all sectors, with the aim of fostering collaborative efforts beneficial to both nations and the private sector.
During the appointment, representatives from leading U.S. companies in Mexico were able to express their concerns regarding various issues, including the USMCA, investment, labor, and legislation related to the bilateral relationship, as well as recent initiatives in competition and telecommunications.
Attendees expressed concern regarding the current climate impacting both countries, which undoubtedly impacts all sectors, particularly labor, and poses a risk to investment in the nation.
The Morena Parliamentary Group’s work agenda in the Chamber of Deputies includes strengthening Mexico’s economy and investment through reforms that promote inclusion and collaboration, taking into account the private sector.
Deputy Ramírez Cuéllar expressed the legislature’s interest in ensuring sound policy-making that benefits all sectors, stating that collaborative efforts are essential to ensure all voices are heard and included in the ongoing reform processes.
He also clarified that the proposed regulations on digital platforms are aimed at e-commerce and do not seek to restrict freedom of expression.
Larry Rubin, in turn, requested continued joint efforts to maintain an agenda aligned with the concerns of society and businesses. He added that the American Society of Mexico is actively engaged in matters related to technology and the USMCA, and concurred with the Deputy on the need to combine efforts and create improved conditions for all.

Message from the CEO of TECHO US David Sánchez Campos:
“We will continue to work towards a just and poverty-free Latin America, hand in hand with community leaders, the public sector, volunteers, and the private sector. TECHO is not the end; TECHO is merely a bridge that facilitates encounters that would otherwise be improbable.”

We’re launching a major training project for our organizations!
With the participation of 66 individuals from various organizations, we successfully held the webinar “Your Board of Directors and Its Role in Fundraising,” led by the U.S.–Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership (BPP).
The central objective was to highlight the active role that boards of directors must assume in fundraising. Through practical tools and recommendations for achieving a successful financial strategy, the need for a shared vision, institutional commitment, and co-responsible leadership was emphasized.
Participants enjoyed exchanging real-world examples and experiences, which fostered reflection on how to train and structure the board to function as a key ally in financial sustainability.
This was an opportunity to reiterate that economic growth must go hand in hand with social well-being through better-prepared organizations.
Experiences
Designed as if each line were drawn by wind and water, the architecture of La Casa de la Playa does not seek to dominate the landscape —it pays homage to it. Limestone, noble woods, and organic textures evoke the Mayan earth, while open forms invite the horizon into every corner.
The suites are sanctuaries suspended between sky and ocean. Their infinity pools do more than reflect the day’s blue —they seem to melt into the sunset, as if the house itself fades away with the departing sun. Here, every space breathes intimacy, and every detail tells a story woven with threads of craftsmanship and reverence for local culture.
While the body finds rest, the soul awakens at XAL, the restaurant where the genius of Andoni Luis Aduriz, one of the most visionary alchemists in the world of gastronomy, has left his mark.
At XAL, cuisine is a sensory voyage that transcends geography. With the richness of Mexico as its canvas and Andoni’s avant-garde mind as its brush, each dish is a living creation. Ancestral maize meets fermentation, cacao is reimagined as a bittersweet song, and smoke becomes a language. Dining here is like conversing with the earth, time, and art —a journey rooted in tradition and lifted by imagination.
And when everything already seems perfect, the spa at La Casa de la Playa emerges as a sanctuary of stillness where water, stone, and silence heal with ancient tenderness. Inspired by pre-Hispanic rituals and modern techniques, this temple of wellness calls for total surrender.
From ceremonial temazcals to massages with warm stones that seem to whisper stories from the deep earth, the spa doesn’t just relax the body —it invites a profound, almost spiritual reconnection. It’s a gentle reminder that true luxury is not about excess, but presence.
La Casa de la Playa is a revelation. A place where architecture whispers poetry, gastronomy awakens the senses, and wellness becomes sacred ritual. In Xcaret, this retreat stands as a tribute to what humans can create when they listen to nature and dare to dream.
